End of Module Evaluation

Despite at first not really understanding the purpose of the module, by the end I can say with confidence I found PPP to be a valuable and necessary part of the first year. Having a forum that pushes you to engage in your chosen discipline outside of the collage guidelines and briefs, is ultimately what motivates one to become passionate and serious about their chosen course. I have alway found myself to be very lazy when it comes to academic work, leaving most things to the last minute. The PPP module has allowed me break that habit by pushing me to constantly be on 'ball' outside of practice. Having that push to be constantly recording, whether that be gallery visits or simply finding things that I like, allows me to build inspiration and research, that then contributes to my practice.

I found the presentations really enjoyable, and I really see the importance in pushing us as students to become comfortable around this skill, as it's something that can really drive our career. Despite being really nervous to put myself out there in the spotlight and under scrutiny from my peers, the adrenaline rush and alleviating sensation afterwards made it really worth it. I personally feel I learned a lot, and became a lot more comfortable around my own work afterwards. Also, seeing how nervous everyone else was really helped ease my insecurities within the class.

Overall, the module really allowed me to reflect of my successes and downfalls of the year. Looking back on work done at the start, really allowed me to understand what I've learnt and how things I rejected at first have now hugely impacted my practice. Despite originally feeling like I was maybe on the wrong course, after undergoing PPP to see my own progress and realising how interested I actually am in the Graphic Design culture, allowed me to feel a lot more secure within my chosen discipline.

Final Presentation

I thought the final presentation went really well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could have very much spent more time on layout and aesthetics of the presentation, as I did feel mine feel behind in this aspect, however I was really confident with the content and what I had to say about each slide, and thus the overall delivery was successful.

Trump Protest

Attending the protest again President Trump's bigoted executive orders concerning his sexist, xenophobic and racist actions since the start of his presidency. It was a really amazing to experience such a union of people of all ages, and to see people working together to stand up for their beliefs and for equality. The protest also had a sea of hand-made placards that were both artistic, humorous and very effective at the same time. It was particularly good research for investigating protest aesthetic which I was investigating for one of my studio development projects.

Distorting Photography

I really enjoy using photography to create these surrealist environments and scenes. By editing the images using unrealistic colouring and extreme contrasting techniques, the subsequent imagery I find to become dramatic and befitting of surrealism photography. This is something I am just currently beginning to explore, however when I improve with digital editing software hopefully this could be taken further and used within my studio practice.

The below photographs show the before and after relationships between photographs. The building images were taken at the Barbican in London, and had a focus on geometric structure.

Name, Pay-off & Description

To kick off our self-branding task, we were to come up with a name and pay -off that would encompass the identity we wished to have as a designer, in order to sell oneself to a client or business.

At first I struggled to express what I wanted to be as a designer, as I do feel lost within the course, and not necessarily ready to chose a path to go down. In the end, I decided to go down the sarcastic route, as that is a quality of myself I recognise and probably comes through in my work, whether that be politically or socially.

As such, my initial ideas plays on my name in combination with the famous Danny Darko character, who represents quite dark connotations (as exemplified within the name), as well as a pay-off which I personally find hilarious. Inverted commas on random words are always funny.

Self Branding - Production

The final step was to evolve my brand further in order to stand out from the competition. With the strong concept, if I could create additional applications to stand alongside and support my identity, then a stronger brand forms. As such I looked into what sort of everyday things are detachable yet part of a whole - the key concept behind POD. I decided that triangular magnets, triangle and detachable rubbers on pencils, as well as hoodies with detachable hoods would be strong and plausible creations to move forward with. Additionally, the hoodies would hold the more raw design versions for the brand, and thus promote it in a stylish way.

Self Branding - Business Cards

The business cards sort of tied together all the ideas and themes into one strong visual representation of what I wanted as my self branding task. This idea of a close relationship, based on trust, that can build into a relationship - as it is important to keep close clientele and build a trusting exchange. It also incorporated the idea of 'Point Of Difference' - which is ultimately what I stand for as a designer and the clientele I seek to attract.
