About Mascara
'Mascara has found fashion’s magical midway point between edgy and sexy and has won the hearts of the cynical fashion press. The Mascara Collection has been experiencing rapid growth season on season and has won the highly respected accolade for the Best British Occasion and Evening Wear Brand.
Mascara has been generated by the House Of Frank Saul a renowned and respected supplier to the wholesale industry established in 1980 built on morals and integrity.
Frank Saul Fashions Ltd has been highly awarded throughout the years collecting accolades such as Exporter of the Year and has been recognised as a key supplier to major buying groups across Europe.
We continue to innovate and deliver the highest possible standards of design and manufacture using the finest materials with intricate beading and ground breaking embroideries.
Targeting the fashionable woman who is not shy about who she is, the Woman that wears Mascara is seductive and sensual'
I worked for two weeks at Mascara over Easter, a high-end designer fashion brand looking to evolve their company more in-line with the opportunities of the digital age.
As the collections can only be viewed from main office or at exhibition show rooms they curate around the world, they wanted to build their social media presence. This is thus a decision to expand their business to a younger, more current audience. As such, they hired popular models for their latest collection, with big followings on Instagram. I was lucky enough to shadow the Art Director at the shoot for their Summer Collection. It was a great insight into industry, of what goes into these productions. The whole process from location, to assistance, lighting, and editing required a lot of work. This experience definitely helped me to be more efficient and tactical when photographing the production of my own work.
I was tasked with Instagram curation and to produce a small spring catalogue, as they were impressed with my existing publication portfolio.
The positives of getting work experience with a small company is that I got to produce work with a lot of freedom, that would then be produced and distributed on a large scale. This was a great way to get both my foot in the door, and my work out to the public.
I am not a fan of fast fashion at all due to its environmental and social degradation. High-end brands can also have similar qualities, but this company is particularly conscious of their material and dye production, aiming to be as sustainable as possible. This really stood out to me and was reflected in the work environment, and with how they treated me as an intern.
The final zine produced for the collection was heavily based on colour and texture. The lo-fi aesthetic resembled much of the in-trend Parisian highbrow fashion brands productions of current, with the intention of appealing to a youthful market, as they are the most lucrative. It sought to have a minimal aesthetic appeal, with a careful selection of colour transition.
