Industry Engagement
This trip was a fantastic insight into the world of print, exploring both the methods of production and how to best liaise with printer companies.
Key things noted:
- Printing in scale
- Pricing (1 print and 100 prints can be the same price depending on method selected - plaits)
- Stock choices / value
- Speed (i.e. 40,000 an hour)
- Ways of manufacturing - cutting devices and machinery
- Intricacies - timing, file sizes, file layouts
- Newest methods / stocks
- Built connections with the industry
Appon arrival we were allowed to go into the stock room and take whatever we wanted form their leftover prints. This was a great opportunity to gather various printing productions, from leaflets, to guides, posters, and high quality publications. I sought to collect an array of finishes (e.g. foiling, embossing, fold techniques) in order to utilise for inspiration in my later work, as well as having examples of what to ask for after university when I don't have access to the current printing resources.
