émergent Magazine Launch Party (Issue 4)
I attended the launch party for émergent magazine's newest issue. At the event, London based emerging artists; Hetty Douglas and Samuel de Gunzburg partook in a panel discussion about the importance of promoting emerging artists.
About
émergent is a biannual magazine that showcases painters through interviews, intimate conversations and essays. Their ultimate goal is to provide a curated space for artists to exhibit their work. Each issue attempts to adopt the ideals of a gallery as it displays a series of new work by contemporary artists. émergent allows people to engage with the work timelessly - not only will you discover new artists, but your issue will become an archived piece.DATEAGLE ART is an independent London-based online platform, founded in 2017 by Vanessa Murrell and Martin Mayorga, that supports UK-based emerging artists in the form of interviews, studio visits, blog content, and both online and offline exhibition curation. Their online content is ad-free and they personally visit and meet every artist that they interview and feature.
Liberia Bookshop
Liberia is a really wacky and communal place. Cramped in a vibrant collection of grassroots styled publications that reflect the concepts of individual makers, despite the digital revolution. I love this book shop in particular because it is a lesser known space that reminds me of something out of a fantasy film. It's community, grassroots approach to publication sharing makes it a comfortable setting for the analogue nerds like myself. The little stock they have means every visit involves new products that keeps each visit exciting and up-to-date with what the industry is getting out there.
Emergent Magazine:
émergent is a magazine showcasing painters through interviews, conversations and essays. With the aim to provide a curated space in which artists work can be better understood. Each issue attempts to adopt the ideals of a gallery within the printed page, and features a new group of contemporary artists that exhibit a series of recent works, along with in-depth interviews and a rare look into the studio.
Reception
Although predominantly design focused, I have a strong interest in the conceptual arts world. I think it is an important sector to stay engaged in as to not to get stuck in creating art solely for a consumerist market. The lucid aspect to design is often lost within fine arts, however this loose and often emotive, material-driven way of presenting ideas is a great outlet to stay engaged in.
I love the way graphic design and paintings fuse together to create a more broadly accessible publication output. A great example of design where typography and layout aids the legibility of the fine artists work, placing it into a widely understood context, and thus commercialising it successfully.
