The design wanted
to create a space for others to reflect on the concepts I put out. It wanted to
be personal. Loud but modest. Playful but professional. Allude to ideas of
oneness, and present myself as the alternative, non-conventional person I am.
The initial
concept was to weigh in on the design agenda I have of pooling cultures,
building knowledge and understanding through other-ways-of seeing. This was
encompassed by the idea to ‘see differently’, sending out a ‘grow your own
alien’ that would also connote me being ‘out of this world’.
This idea was
supported by notions of sustainability, with the concept of having an
additional Ikea-style instruction manual for how to grow the alien, and then
how to use the leftover pod to grow a plant (as to not waste the plastic).
After attempting
this in application, it because clear the design should strip back and focus on
something that could be easily transferrable across many branding outputs. The
design then looked at ideas of using sacred geometrical forms as the basis of my
logo and for pattern design on the material, due to its visual representations
of oneness.
Idea 1:
Idea one
Idea 2
The design then considered focusing on my photography and notions of diverse typography to achieve the idea of a series explored in the research stages. Using imagery from a disregarded design development from my favourite project this year, I experimented with creating possible business cards that explored colour and type to present me as worldly (as the images were taken at various locations travelling) and to allude to the key aspects of graphic design.
This idea was disregarded as the imagery is too graphic. The business cards need to be more neutral if I am to reach a wider cliental, and present my broad spectrum of skills, not just photography.
Lastly, the design considered extra's that could be sent in a package to connote play. This included mini games that one would get in party bags, which would allude to the nostalgia part of my concept. It was decided that these would be a waste of plastic, along with the alien idea, which is apart of my manifesto - to produce things that have reason and are not wasteful.
