Girlhood: Collaboration Zine

I collaborated with a fashion photography student for her final model zine. The zine, titled 'girlhood' was focused around different women and their identity. Touching on what makes us unique, and how what we wear and own defines the way we are perceived to others, I was approached to design the cover as well as the layout for the photographs.

I wanted the layout and type choices to mirror the photographer. She is a big fan of colour within her work, and using backgrounds that heighten the colour of the clothing of the subjects. Her style is not as conventionally 'girly' as perhaps a lot of others in her class and so I wanted that to be reflected with the colour choices and logotype.

This new age of women, living in the most open society to date is something that should be celebrated - however it is important to note there is still a white to go, but the progression of equal and realistic representations of women in the media is growing.  As such the logotype steers clear of stereotypical 'girly' colours and instead mirrors a sort of 70s nostalgia. Up-beat, happy hippie sort of connotations. Still, it is clear, bold and satisfying in its aesthetic. The inside spreads followed an inconsistent grid. As the subjects were youthful, alternative girls with a clear uniqueness and edge to their personalities, I wanted the layout to mirror their 'coolness' if you will. I selected the images to flow in colour, picking out the consistency in, for example, yellows, so that the pages became more an more colourful to an extent.

This zine won the award for best publication in the class. It was noted to be the only zine without an image on the front. This is how collaborations amongst creatives can create these mutually beneficial relationships. My experience with layout design complimented and enhances the overall reception of her photographs. My awareness of the effects of simplicity make the zine stand out from a bunch in a more intriguing manner.
