Day Five
BAFIC (his birthday 21t june 93)
- core for everything he works in now - process into making videos
- film / club flyers / videos
- Researching, leading, structure, baseline grid - the reasons
- you can design the world you want to live in
- Studied at Camberwell Graphic Design 2 year course
- the roles and opportunities that lie ahead are not always easily defined - you can be experimental
- lie depending on what room you're in (the narrative - what's the core message, the medium is just the vessel)
- Find out everything you can about them - bug em out - show these people you know who they are - core values
- your peers are the 'industry'
- there are no rules
- 'the designers general visual awareness is unquestionably helpful - this plus the kind of understanding they have about the particular problem they are dealing with from a content point of view. but the qualities that make a graphic designer a good filmmaker really havent got to do with the specific area of design. they have more to do with their sense of story, their inventiveness and their visual/aural sensitivity' - Saul Bass
- the tipping point
- the need for visuals to aid music, taking the song to another place - creating a narrative a context - e.g. Childish Gambino this is america
- choice errors - obsessed with systems (first ever music video) - editorial design on a screen moving
- super 8m film vibrant colours
- Nike collab with the London Underground: NikeLab x Roundell video
- Embers of type and imagery become to glue that hold the hole thing together - takes you from scene to scene - the frame doesn't have to restrict, can take you on a journey
- investigation the client - what was the first song you listened to that made you wanna do what you do - find out their tastes, concepts etc
- tests with videos, initial sketches idea with phone, messing around with concepts, editing, shooting on faulty phones
- Rhianna work music video - two videos in one - no rules, over a bilion views on YouTube - be prepared and embrace change from clients, work with probems - solve them or keep producing

Tom and Chris
1. developing methodologies as a student
2. how does that feed into commercial practice
3. prepping for industry
Masters at Royal College (RCA) 2 years ago - where they met
- developing a route that feeds into the projects and styles
- want to end up in different places / doesn't need to be so consistent if you change up your process
- Curated exhibition to see how it works together
cut up type and rearrange into a typeface
experimenting with processes that don't use in education - means to test other parts that expand into work
break from highbrow institution thinking
trying something radially different every time
have an ongoing fie of inspiration, type forms, lettering, symbols, building work from found typography - re-contextualising in a contemporary context
testing grounds that you can more forward with
compiling different print outlets - commercial printing and putting it together
risograph inserts
used opportunities to churn out work and posters that pushed and tested different forms
ultimately became their practice over the institutional way of teaching graphic design - this allows them to do that style in their professional practice - they can now convince clients to use this style
got a small desk in their old print room
wanted to set up immediately - fuelled by an itsnicethat article and deadline
once set up sent out an email to everyone they knew to get clients
enthusiasm for form
Their projects:
1. Informa
Architectural Journal for university of Porto Rico
- saw their work at show, emailed them to pitch for the project
- Use Lithuanian printers
- experimentation of mixing colours in print
- process became the identity
2. Tinted Window
Critical writing book layout
- Herve guibert
- form of writing and the way type can be presented - experimental type layouts
- PVC slip jacket
- had no money so had to do a kickstarter
3. British Council
Branding for international drawing exhibition
- jazz poster - ETC asked to pitch for childrens book
- curator Lauren Child - charlie and lola books
- designed identity with her illustration
- she didn't have time so had to set an environment for her to work within and around
came up with a flat system template or 4 posters which she could draw ontop
if the posters are in a space they link together
- had to accommodate for being able to be printed in many different countries
4. Serpentine Work Marathan
Serpentine Book and branding
- got links through old tutors
- didn't know it was a pitch they thought they already had it
5. RCA SHOW 2018
- desiged the shows identity
- spec work
- built a tool for the idenity - allowed them to spit out different versions of letterform, manifested into large formats, kinetic
- variable printing - every version of the logo printed slightly different
6. Mute Records
type singularity project
- rebranding project for a Chinese art school
- Studio Intro - mute records 40th anniversary
- symph
- design the artwork for the tools and the outputs for the board
- an excerice in form, technicalities, ways of working
Prepping for Industry:
- currently in Hackney Wick
- Nothing can replace good work - there are no shortcuts
- Don't make a website in a night - focus on docuentations and a strong PDF portfolio first
- Utilise your time in education to make interesting work - push practice whilst you can
- Strategise and customise your approach to people - dont BCC its lazy and no mass emails
- Go to stuff! - meet people and ask questions
- Make a list of designers / studios your interested in
